What Is A Bass Guitar?

The electric bass guitar belongs to the string family of instruments and is similar to other guitars in structure. The bass has a slightly larger body than the regular electric guitar and is played an octave lower in pitch. This instrument is a popular replacement instrument for the double bass and is featured in all genres of music. The body of the bass guitar is usually made of wood, such as maple and rosewood. It is played most commonly by plucking the four strings that are stretched from base to the neck of the instrument. Some players use a pick for a unique sound, and others use what is referred to as a funky slap. The bass produces a bass line in tunes, and many times carries the melody, but can also be featured in a solo. There are many easy to learn bass guitar riffs which will enhance your playing and your soloing.

Why play the bass?

A bassist or bass player is either the most respected or most pitied member of a musical group, depending on the genre. Because of the wide range of music types that utilize the bass, and the varying amount of talent required to be successful within each, bass is a highly desirable instrument for players of all levels. Alongside drummers, bassists are often the most accomplished musicians within a band. I have seen bassist's who were the obvious leader of the band (e.g. Sting), and others who simply blend into the background. It's up to you and your talent.
